About

Lori Lenz and John Harvey created Be the Cure Tappahannock as a collaborative initiative to address several health-related concerns in our area.  Local, regional, and state organizations (the Greater Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, the Ledwith – Lewis Free Clinic, and the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation) are working together to raise awareness and funds in our small, rural community in Virginia.  Our goals are to inform citizens of the resources and services available and to increase services and programs in Essex County.  We call our events Be the Cure Tappahannock to represent our contribution to the ultimate resolution of these diseases – the cure.
The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research. From face-to-face support to online education programs and promising worldwide research initiatives, the money we raise makes a difference in the lives of those facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia and those caring for them.

John's Story

Monday 6th Apr
I support the fight against Alzheimer’s because this disease has touched far too many of my family members and friends. It is heartbreaking to watch the people you love slowly change as Alzheimer’s takes away their memories, their independence, and part of who they are. For me, this cause is especially personal because of my beloved mother, Doris Harvey. Seeing someone so dear to me affected by this horrible disease has made me even more determined to stand up, speak out, and do what I can to help!
I walk and volunteer in honor of my mother and for every family who has had to experience the pain of Alzheimer’s. I walk because I believe we can find a cure, and I want to be part of bringing hope to others. No one should have to go through the heartbreak that this disease causes. That is why we need your support—together, we can raise awareness, fund research, and move closer to a world without Alzheimer’s! Please consider a donation to this especially worthy cause and BE THE DIFFERENCE!

Lori's Story

Monday 6th Apr

Sadly, I have lost four members of my immediate family to Alzheimer’s Disease; my father, Norman Spiro,  my father – in – law, John Lenz, my sister – in – law, Carol Yearling, and in 2024, my husband, Larry Lenz.  My father and my husband – the two men whom I loved deeply.  I am channeling my grief into my passion, my passion into my purpose, and my purpose into my call to action.  I want to help create a world without Alzheimer’s Disease and all forms of dementia for all future generations.

I have become an advocate at the local, state, and federal levels, a community educator, and a proud volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association.  Together, we can change the trajectory of this dreadful disease.

Thank you for your support.  Please join us at the Bee Your Best 5 K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 6, 2026  and save the date for the Picnic With a Purpose on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
