I'm fundraising because...
Alzheimer's and dementia research has always been close to my heart because my grandfather suffered from dementia in the later years of his life. Growing up in the US, family visits to Taiwan occurred yearly at best, exacerbating the difficulty my grandfather had remembering my sister and me. It saddens me that most of our shared memories come from before I even finished middle school, but I hope to honor him with this fundraiser.
Training for this half marathon after having asthma for most of my life has reminded me of the resilience and patience that both patients and their families must maintain when dealing with Alzheimer's.
I believe fundraising for research is critical right now given that some of the most major breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment have occurred in just the last couple of years. As societies worldwide age, the number of people with Alzheimer's disease is expected to more than double by 2050, so the contributions and awareness we raise today are especially impactful.
Regardless of donation, I appreciate anyone who has taken the time to read this and understand the gravity of the work that the Alzheimer's Association is doing!
