Charlie Shaffer

We are in the process of navigating the loss of Charlie. He was truly colorful, full of life, and completely one of a kind. We will continue to refine this page in the coming weeks as we find the right words to honor him.

Charlie built a long and successful career in sales, beginning in the arts and crafts industry and later transitioning into the Halloween and costume business in the early 2000s. Over the years, he represented more than 40 product lines as a manufacturers’ sales representative, forming lasting relationships and bringing enthusiasm, humor, and authenticity to everything he did.

An active and adventurous man, Charlie completed 31 half and full marathons and participated in enduro motorcycle races and cycling events. In his later years, he developed a deep passion for cycling, embracing the freedom and joy it brought him. He loved fishing, abalone diving, camping, backpacking, and exploring the outdoors—always happiest when surrounded by nature. In the early 1980s, he also coached high school wrestling at American High School, supporting his son Charles and sharing his belief in discipline, perseverance, and teamwork with young athletes. He lived by the idea of “use it or lose it,” always pushing himself and encouraging others to keep moving forward.

Charlie was also a creative spirit with a love for pottery. As a Raku instructor, he generously shared both his craft and his creations, gifting pieces to friends and colleagues over the years. He loved music—especially country—concerts, dancing, and storytelling, and he had a way of bringing people together wherever he went. He never met a stranger and had a knack for turning everyday moments into stories worth retelling. He was also known for quietly picking up the dinner bill before anyone else had the chance—a small gesture that said a lot about his generosity.

That energy and spirit defined him for so many years.

For more than seven years, Charlie lived with Alzheimer’s (vascular dementia), a disease that gradually took so much from such a vibrant and active person. Watching someone you love change in this way is incredibly difficult, and no family should have to navigate it alone.

In honor of Charlie, we are raising funds to support the important work of the Alzheimer’s Association—providing care and support for families, advancing critical research, and offering a lifeline through their free 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900).

If you feel moved to do so, we would be deeply grateful for a memorial gift in Charlie’s name. Your support helps ensure that others facing this disease have access to the resources, care, and hope they need.

Thank you for your kindness, support, and for helping us celebrate Charlie’s life. We are especially grateful to share this photo of Charlie and Dianne (his wife of 65 years)—a reflection of the love, partnership, and life they built together.
