In Memory of John Raymond O’Connell

John Raymond O’Connell, 82, formerly of New Milford, NJ, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer’s disease. A proud New Yorker, he was born in Manhattan to James and Bridget O’Connell and was lovingly raised by his Aunt Kate and Uncle John Claffey. Deeply devoted to providing for his family, John continued working even after retiring from MABSTOA, serving the New Milford Board of Education as a custodian with dedication and pride. A true family man, he found his greatest joy in time spent with those he loved most. He was also a passionate sports fan, especially when cheering on his favorite New York teams, the Mets and the Jets. John leaves behind his devoted wife, Teresa O’Connell (née Fandino). He is lovingly remembered by his cherished daughter, Andrea Bridget Kosoy, and her husband, Alex, as well as by his beloved son, John David O’Connell, and his wife, Katherine. John took immense joy in his grandchildren—Tyler, Ethan, Spencer, Lyanna, and Aiden, and grandniece Sofia Bella—each of whom brought light to his life. As a child who was taken in by my family members, he held a special place in his heart for nephew Rafael Perez and his niece Barbara Capin (née Fandino) who spent periods of their lives in his home. His love extended to many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other members of his family, all of whom felt his warmth. He is survived by his cousins John Claffey and Karen Bailey (née Claffey), whose sibling bond with him endured through the years. John was predeceased by his siblings Marie Carpenito, James O’Connell, and Joan Smith, and by his cousin Catherine Buchanan (nee Claffey), all of whom he carried with him in spirit. While Alzheimer’s disease slowly changed so much of his world, John will always be remembered for the love, laughter, and meaningful moments that defined his life. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 113 South Farview Avenue, Paramus, NJ. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 am Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Visitation R.C. Church, 234 N. Farview Avenue, Paramus, NJ. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
