Welcome to my virtual luminary page
I’m participating in The Longest Day to fundraise for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. In honor of the winter solstice on December 21, I created a luminary to shine a light on the darkness of Alzheimer’s. This season feels especially dark because it will be the first without my Mother. She was a light in many people's lives, as were my Aunt and my Grandmother who also passed due to Alzheimer's years ago.
Today, an estimated 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, including more than 6 million Americans. In the United States alone, more than 11 million friends and family members are providing their care. There is nothing more agonizing and terrifying than watching a light go out slowly behind a loved one's eyes as the long goodbye takes place-often over a period of years. Eventually the lights of recognition slowly go out of someone's eyes completely for a person due to this disease. When someone asks, is anyone home? We really don't know, as sometimes it seems the person has left us despite still physically being here. We need more research to help illuminate so many questions and provide solutions.
Please, your donation could help shed light on Alzheimer's disease and bring hope to countless people and their families and friends, not just during the winter or summer solstices, but all year long. Thank you.
