I'm fundraising for...

In my mind and heart, the Camel’s Hump Challenge trail, my father’s (Jack Handy) participation in creating and skiing it and his eventual decline from Alzheimer’s Disease are viscerally entwined. Dad helped Warren Beeken and his friends- a leathery, wooly, knickered, nut munching crew- create this ski trail in the 1980's and ‘90’s. Dad’s background in the 10^th Mountain Division inspired his lifelong passion for creating trails wherever he lived, so this was a perfect opportunity in his 60’s and 70’s to continue his passion from his Huntington doorstep. The crew’s early morning visits enroute to the trail at our Camel's Hump Nordic Ski Center home thrilled our small children- August and Noah- on an almost weekly basis. “Wawwen’s here!” they would call as the knock reverberated throughout the cabin. Over the years we watched- and sometimes joined- many hardy skiers realize Warren Beeken’s dream of skiing in the outback of Vermont to raise money towards a cure of this devastating disease.

Currently, more than 6 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and that number is expected to grow to nearly 13 million by 2050. Our future is at risk, and we must come together to change the course of this disease.
