In Loving Memory of Otto "Bulla" Peña

Otto "Bulla" Peña lived life with joy, laughter, and an unmistakable presence. His nickname, "Bulla," fit him perfectly. In Spanish, bulla means a lively noise or commotion, and if you knew Otto, you know it couldn't have been more fitting. Friends and family would often smile and say, "Ahí viene Otto Bulla," knowing that wherever he went, laughter, lively conversation, and the occasional spirited debate were never far behind.

Whether he was telling jokes, sharing stories, or engaging in lively conversations about history and politics, he had a way of drawing people in and making every conversation memorable.

Otto had a gift for making people feel like old friends, even if they had just met. Before long, they usually were. Since his passing, our family has been deeply touched by the many stories shared by people we never even knew he knew; stories of kindness, generosity, and quiet acts of compassion that he never spoke about. Helping others wasn't something he did for recognition; it was simply part of who he was.

Above all, Otto was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved and cared deeply for his family, especially his beloved wife, whose well-being was always one of his greatest priorities. He cherished his siblings, adored his nieces and nephews, and had a way of making each of them feel loved.

He also loved staying active and could often be found walking through the streets of New York City. He simply enjoyed being out and about, where there was always someone to greet and a conversation waiting to happen.

For someone whose greatest joy was talking, laughing, and connecting with people, Alzheimer's disease took away the very things that defined him. Watching that transformation was heartbreaking. Yet the disease never diminished the kindness, generosity, and love he gave throughout his life, nor the countless lives he touched.

Thank you for helping us celebrate the life of Otto "Bulla" Peña. We hope you'll remember him with a smile, a good story, and perhaps even a lively conversation, just as he would have wanted.
