I'm fundraising to run for something greater than myself...
This will be my third marathon, and the second I've run for charity. My first marathon was incidentally and unfortunately only 6 months after I lost my Dad. About twenty miles into the race, and struggling through pain and exhaustion, a runner next to me asked me a simple question... "what are you running for"?
It felt natural to tell her I was running for my Dad. She responded that she was running for her mother who she had recently lost to Alzheimer's. We embraced, and pushed forward. Having spoken my purpose out loud I felt a surge of confidence and commitment that carried me through the end of the race.
That question -- "what are you running for?" -- stuck with me permanently as I set my sights to run more marathons. Training gets you to the starting line, but a greater purpose carries you through it.
This year I'm running for Team ALZ, a group committed to combatting the terrible disease that took the mother of the woman I ran beside during my first marathon. Alongside my teammates on Team ALZ, I've committed to raising awareness and funds to advance the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association® a disease impacting more than 6 million Americans.
All funds raised will benefit the Alzheimer's Association and its work to enhance care and support programs and advance research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and, ultimately, a cure for Alzheimer's disease.
Keep a look out for me and my teammates running in purple come November in NYC!
