My Story

Wednesday 18th Feb

Women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s are women; mothers, daughters, mentors, and friends.

In 2020, one of the wisest women I’ve ever known, my mom, Cheri Pepito, became part of that statistic.

My name is Amber Pepito and when I was a senior in high school my family and I started seeing changes in my mom’s behavior. She started to become consistently forgetful, from losing her phone to getting confused while driving. After a series of cognitive tests my mom was told her ability to perform basic tasks was severely impaired.

At just 58 years old, my mom was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Shortly after, I left for college. As her symptoms worsened, our family felt completely in the dark. We were met with a lack of guidance and clarity from healthcare professionals. I felt helpless being so far away, desperately trying to find answers while being passed from one specialist to the next.

Then one simple search changed everything.

Finding the hotline for the Alzheimer's Association lifted a weight off our shoulders. For the first time, someone answered our questions. Someone listened. Someone helped.

The Association became a consistent and life-changing resource for our family.

The information they provided helped us navigate her symptoms and better care for her when her diagnosis was later changed to Lewy body dementia. Through their education, we felt less alone and more empowered during an incredibly uncertain time.

We quickly became involved with the Walk to End Alzheimer's in both Riverside and San Luis Obispo counties, turning our pain into purpose.

In 2024, after a four-year battle with dementia, my mom’s journey came to an end.

But her story did not.

After her passing, I continued sharing her experience. With the support of the San Luis Obispo chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, I began educating students on campus and raising awareness in our community.

Wise Women & Wine is an extension of that mission. This is just another way to honor her and all of the women facing this disease.

We hope you will join us on April 19th. If you are unable to attend, we deeply appreciate any contribution or donation made in support of this cause.

Together, we raise a glass:
To wisdom.
To strength.
To the women who shape us.
And to a future without Alzheimer’s.
