About Checkmating Alzheimer's

Monday 13th Jul
Checkmating Alzheimer's is a chess-based community initiative founded in November 2024 by Caton Tsao and Allen Hong, aiming to promote the Association's mission of "a world without Alzheimer's and dementia." The project runs chess clubs at retirement communities across Upstate SC to build sociable communities through chess and develop positive lifestyle habits while improving cognitive function in seniors. Checkmating Alzheimer's also hosts charity chess tournaments to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. To date, the team has expanded to 7 youth leaders in South Carolina, raised over $2,000, and reached over 2,000 people through Instagram and in-person events, including a schoolwide TED-style presentation and multiple awareness speeches at the 2025 and 2026 SC State Scholastic Chess Championship.
