When I get where I’m going
Thursday 25th Jun Oh my Goodness, when I get where I’m going by Brad Paisley come on. I think of my Dad, joking, hunting, fishing, a real stand up guy!! But sometimes I think it is more like, I don’t know where I’m going. If your parent has ever been a silver alert, you know how scary that can be. He was gone for three hours. He had his phone all messed up, but eventually he did get something right where it finally showed his location. He made it 30 minutes away to Hastings, and had bought some Coca Colas and Reese Cups. St John’s Sherriff office stayed with him once we had his location. It’s funny he told them we dropped him off. He sure was glad to see mama, We watched the security cameras at the store and the cops said, are you trying to get your wife in trouble. It was funnyCaregiver Rest
Thursday 18th Jun So in case you don’t know! Brad Paisley is coming to St Augustine and I get to go!!!!! If you are aware of how exhausting caregiving is, you know that is huge. So I am not walking, running, knitting, baking for a good cause. I am dressing up, going to relax, sing my heart out and cry if Brad plays When I get were I am going! I am doing this for Daddy, Mama, My honey Mike, Dana, Tammy, Cindy, everyone that SecondWind Dreams has touched, Bailey, Donna, Tommy - too many caregivers to name -if you have loved and cared for someone donateThe original Picture
Thursday 11th Jun So the original picture of Chuck and Dolly we still have, and some copies. The funny banter between Chuck and Daddy on the Dolly stories always kept us laughing. Laughter is the best medicine. we had a collection of Dolly stuff, and Peopke Magazine, a postcard from Dollywood, a Christmas ornament. We loved watching 9 to 5. I was Glad when Dollar General came out with Dolly stuff! Island in the stream was my favorite duet! We have watched many of her movies. Who doesn’t need some Dolly to get them through the day!When I get where I am going
Sunday 7th JunThis picture of my dad and Dolly has such a great backstory. Daddy was friends with Chuck Mullins, who worked in the auto parts industry. Chuck went to school with Dolly Parton and had his picture taken with her at a class reunion. Knowing my dad was a huge Dolly fan, Chuck brought back a framed copy of that picture for him. Dad absolutely loved it and hung it on his office wall.
If you knew my dad, you loved him. He was incredibly smart, caring, witty, and had a great sense of humor. His secretary, PJ, decided to have some fun. Long before the days of AI, she carefully copied the photo, cut Dolly out, and seamlessly placed Dolly into the picture with Daddy. It looked incredibly real!
Dad hung this new photo of himself and Dolly exactly where Chuck’s original picture had been, and waited for his friend to return. When Chuck came back into the office, he immediately looked for his photo. He burst out laughing when he realized he had been replaced! Over the years, Dad would bring customers into the office and spin tall, funny tales, telling them, "Yeah, Dolly came by here, and I helped her get some parts for her tour bus."
Years later, when Dad developed Alzheimer’s, my mama and I took classes through the REACH program to ensure we were providing him with the best possible care. When Mama graduated from the program, she dressed up as Dolly Parton. I think I might have even worn the wig for a bit, too! Dad, being his usual funny self, took the wig and proudly placed it right over his hat.
Through it all, that picture of Daddy and Dolly was always near him. He ultimately passed away on January 19, 2023—right on Dolly Parton‘s birthday.
