My Updates

13.1 Miles for Dad

Saturday 29th Aug

My dad has always been someone who spent his life showing up for other people.

He is loving, caring, compassionate, funny, and incredibly selfless. He is the kind of person who would put everyone else before himself without ever expecting anything in return.

So much of his life was dedicated to serving others. He served in the Army, became an NYPD police officer, and after undergoing two hip replacements, started a new chapter as a school bus driver. But helping others was never just part of his career. It was simply who he was.

He also spent countless hours coaching underprivileged youth through the PAL boxing program. He gave his time, energy, encouragement, and support to kids in his community, always making sure they had someone in their corner.

He is loved by everyone who knew him, and for good reason.

My dad also loved being active. Music and fitness were a huge part of his life. He loved running, boxing, bike riding, and martial arts. While stationed with the U.S. Army in South Korea, he even earned his black belt in Taekwondo. He was always moving, always doing something, and always finding a way to enjoy life while bringing other people along with him.

In 2016, during my freshman year of high school, my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. At the time, he was still living at home, and none of us could have fully understood just how much this disease would eventually take from him.

Over the years, Alzheimer’s has slowly taken away so many of the things that were once part of his everyday life. Today, my dad lives in a nursing care facility where he is incredibly well cared for, but his disease has progressed to the point where he can no longer walk, talk, or independently do the things he once loved.

Watching someone who spent his entire life being so strong, active, independent, and devoted to helping others lose those abilities has been one of the hardest things to experience.

But Alzheimer’s can never take away who my dad is to me.

He is still the man who served his country and his city. He is still the coach who gave his time to kids who needed someone in their corner. He is still the man who loved music, running, boxing, bike riding, and martial arts. He is still a father, a friend, and someone who has left an impact on so many people throughout his life.

That is why I am running 13.1 miles for him.

I am taking on this half marathon in honor of my dad and raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Every dollar raised will help support the fight against Alzheimer’s through research, care, resources, and support for individuals and families affected by this devastating disease.

For a man who spent his entire life giving so much of himself to others, this is one small way I can give something back in his honor.

Every mile will be for him.

For the man he has always been.
For the man he still is.
For everything Alzheimer’s has taken.
And for the hope that one day, other families will not have to watch someone they love go through the same thing.

13.1 miles for Dad. 💜
