My 2026 Cycling Trip
Tuesday 17th Mar
For the past six years, I have chosen a new destination for my annual cycling trip in support of the Alzheimer’s Association. What was once known as The Longest Day has now been rebranded as Do What You Love to End ALZ (DWYL)—an initiative that allows participants to take action year-round, rather than only on the summer solstice.
For 2026, I will be cycling solo for three days—March 23 through March 25—through Palm Springs and the greater Coachella Valley in the California desert. Each year, I select my destination based on three personal criteria: relatively flat terrain, a reasonable driving distance from home so I can transport my bike, and access to established bike paths or lanes for long-distance riding. The Coachella Valley meets all three, with its CV Link network of bike routes. I’m looking forward to exploring new landscapes while continuing to raise awareness about dementia research, advocacy, care, and support—the core pillars of the Alzheimer’s Association.
My commitment to this cause is deeply personal. I experienced firsthand the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia. When my late husband, Art, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, we were unprepared for the uncertainty and fear that followed. It wasn’t until we connected with our local Alzheimer’s Association that we found the compassionate guidance and support we so desperately needed.
Since then, I have dedicated myself to helping others navigate this difficult journey. As a volunteer Community Educator and Board member for the Northern California–Northern Nevada Chapter, I have delivered 192 educational programs—both in person and virtually—reaching 4,764 individuals across a wide range of communities.
Today, there is real reason for hope. We have entered a new era in Alzheimer’s treatment. In recent years, two medications—Leqembi® (Lecanemab) and Kisunla® (Donanemab)—have emerged from successful long-term clinical trials. These treatments, designed for individuals in the earliest stages of the disease, can slow its progression. While they are not cures, they represent meaningful breakthroughs. With many more therapies in development, we can be optimistic about the future.
Whether you have supported this effort for years or are considering it for the first time, please know how deeply grateful I am—and how much your support means to the individuals and families served by the Alzheimer’s Association. Together, we are moving closer to a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
Gene
