Inspiration for “What’s Your Name?”
Friday 9th Jan
Back in 2011, my mom broke her hip and was doing a few weeks of rehab at St Antoine’s in North Smithfield. When my husband and I visited, we’d pass a lone elderly woman sitting in a hallway with a blank stare. We knew it was Alzheimer’s, but always waved and said hello to her. I wrote a song then called “What’s Your Name?”, imagining what might be going on in her mind. Little did I know that 2 years later, my mom would develop Alzheimer’s and spend her final two years in a nursing home. She passed away in 2014 at age 86.
I’d forgotten about the song until last spring when a Napa vineyard we visited added us to their mailing list. In April, they announced that each year they create a special wine in honor of those whose families have been impacted by Alzheimer’s. They asked folks to send a photo and story and that they would select a number of those photos to put on the bottle label (they donate 50% of the proceeds from the wine to Alzheimer’s). I sent the story of the elderly woman and my mom, the inspiration for the song I wrote. Mom’s photo was chosen and they sent us a poster of the label and we received the bottle of wine we ordered. This led me to wanting to share my song with all of you and in doing so be able to fundraise for the Alzheimer's Association in my home of Rhode Island.
