The Longest Day is the day of the year with the most light - the Summer Solstice. On Saturday, June 20th. I'm participating in Do What You Love to #ENDALZ, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
This is my 7th year, and each year is so very special as I use this experience to reflect on my family's journey and all those touched by Alzheimer's. I lost my mom, Hannah in December 2023 on the winter solstice.
And I continue to walk to bring awareness and attention to this devastating disease.
The last year 2.5 years without my mom have been awful, and it's so unbelievably unfair that she is gone so soon. I miss her every day.
I walk to honor her, the memories of my grandmothers and the others battling this horrific disease. My mom's diagnosis was one of the hardest things to accept. And, acting as her caregiver was one of the most trying roles of my life. This disease takes no prisoners and it affects all of those it touches directly or indirectly with grief, sadness, and frustration. However, you can choose - Choose to learn, choose to laugh, choose to enjoy the great moments when they emerge from your loved one. And, I choose to learn, laugh, enjoy and fight for all those affected by ALZ. My mom's ALZ journey may be over, but there are so many more people to help.
Today, an estimated 55 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, including more than 7 million Americans. In the United States alone, 13 million friends and family members are providing their care.
