Mum and Dad both lived with Alzheimer's. It's hard to put into words what it's like to watch the people who raised you slowly slip out of reach, one memory at a time. It wasn't just the big things, like names and dates. It was the small everyday moments too. The familiar laugh. The easy chat. The confidence of knowing where you are and who you're with.
For a long time, I didn't know what to do with that grief apart from carry it. So I've chosen to move. In May, I'm riding the Race Around the Netherlands North Loop, a 1,400 km (870 mile) ride over 7-8 days. I'll be pedalling through tired legs, sore shoulders, and the odd wobble of self-doubt, but I'll be carrying Mum and Dad with me the whole way.
I ride because it helps my head and my heart. I ride because it reminds me of family. And I ride because there's one thing Alzheimer's hates: us showing up together and doing something about it.
If you're able to donate, thank you. You're not just supporting my ride, you're backing research, support for families, and real hope for a future where fewer people have to go through what Mum and Dad faced. Every gift matters, genuinely. And if you can't donate, sharing the page helps more than you think.

Wednesday 11th FebThis year I’m fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Association, with a goal of $2,500.
In May, I’ll be taking on Race Around the Netherlands (RATN) — 1,400 km (870 miles) over 7 days. It’s a big ride, but it’s not really about the cycling. It’s about doing something tangible to support research, care, and progress against a disease that takes far too much from far too many families.
I’m riding to honor my mum and my dad, who were both affected by Alzheimer’s/dementia. Watching them change was heartbreaking. And if I’m honest, it was incredibly hard not only for them, but for my brother and me, as we tried to support them through the confusion, the fear, and the gradual loss of the person we knew.
If you’ve been close to someone with dementia, you’ll understand this part: it’s a long goodbye. It’s exhausting, it’s relentless, and it leaves a mark.
So this is my way of saying: I still want to fight back, in the only way I know how — one pedal stroke at a time, and with the help of people around me.
If you’re willing, I’d be grateful for your support:
• Donate (any amount helps — truly)
• Share this with others internally
• Or just send a note—it means more than you might think
Thank you for reading, and thank you for helping me honour my parents and support families who are living this right now.
— Peter
