This summer, I'm honoring all those affected by Alzheimer's and other dementias by participating in 48 Peaks, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association. Alzheimer's is near and dear to my heart, and I appreciate you taking the time to donate.
I will be doing two hikes this year. One will be to the summit of Mt Madison, one of New Hampshire's 4,000ft. peaks it's actually 5,367ft. The other is Mt Monadnock 3,165ft. I am reaching out to you as friends and family members to please make a donation and help me reach my goal.
Dementia's have taken away from the lives of many people close to me. Doug is part of this team and is hiking to honor his mom, Marian. My sister, a former colleague and a friend from both college and grad school will be doing one or both of these hikes with me as well.
In the last three years, we have made monumental progress in the world of treatment against Alzheimer's, including the first disease-modifying treatments. But, the fight is far from over. Today, over 50 million people across the world are living with Alzheimer's, including over 7.4 million Americans. In the U.S. alone, more than 11 million caregivers generously dedicate themselves to those with Alzheimer's and dementia, providing over $350 billion worth of unpaid care. We must take action now, as these numbers continue to rise.
Twenty five years ago, when I worked on a memory care unit, the number of Americans living with Alzheimer's was 4 million! Like last year, I am doing this hike for those living with dementia, my dad, Gordon, two of my aunts and the memory of Doug's mom, Marian.
