In Memory of My Mom — And In Honor of Everyone Still Fighting Alzheimer’s

Tuesday 15th Sep
I wrote these words when my mom was still with us, but Alzheimer’s had already begun taking pieces of her away.

I remember feeling hurt and robbed of my Mom—the one person who had always been there when I needed anything. The person I could call at any moment, whether what I needed was tiny or great. The grandmother to my children. The strong, loving presence who had been such an important part of my life.

I remember asking myself, Where is she?

She was still there, but weakened and imprisoned by the monster of Alzheimer’s.

I wondered what she was feeling. Was she scared? Did she worry? Did she still know me? Would she eventually forget me completely?

The answer changed from day to day.

And then, eventually, we lost her.

But Alzheimer’s did not get the final word.

Because even though the disease took so much from my mom, it could never take away who she was or what she gave to all of us.

Mom was so much more than the woman Alzheimer’s left behind.

She was the woman who molded my character and sprinkled my being with all that she was. The woman I looked up to then, and still look up to now. She taught me through her generosity, her guidance, her strength, and her loving care.

I am eternally grateful for her.

I remember holding her hand and hoping that somehow, even when words and memories were slipping away, she could feel what I was trying to give back to her—the peace, comfort, and most of all, the LOVE she had given me throughout my entire life.

Although she could no longer understand all the words I wanted to say, I hope she always knew this:

I LOVE YOU, MOM.

You were more special than you could ever imagine.

Once touched by my mom, you were never quite the same. What a blessing she was to so many people.

And she continues to live on in all of us—in the lessons she taught us, in the love she gave us, in the family she helped shape, and in the memories that Alzheimer’s could never erase.

Today, I am participating in this fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association in my mom’s memory.

I’m doing it for her.

I’m doing it for my family.

And I’m doing it for all of the families who are watching someone they love slowly disappear behind this terrible disease.

No family should have to wonder, “Where did my loved one go?”

No one should have to watch Alzheimer’s steal pieces of someone they love.

And no one should have to face it alone.

Please consider supporting my fundraiser in memory of my Mom and in honor of everyone still fighting Alzheimer’s. Every donation helps support research, care, education, and hope for a future where families don't have to experience this devastating disease the way ours did.

And if you can't donate, please share this. Talk about Alzheimer’s. Learn about it. Check on someone who is caring for a loved one.

Most importantly, cherish your loved ones every day.

Hold their hands.

Make the moments count.

Tell them you love them.

Because we just never know what life will hold for us.

And someday, when the memories of our loved ones become all we have left, may those memories be filled with love.

For my Mom. ❤️
For everyone we've lost.
For everyone still fighting.
And for a future without Alzheimer’s.
