The Right Path To Prevention

Sunday 1st Feb

Since January is a month that New Year’s resolutions are often made and because we now have new and exciting research results from the Alzheimer’s Association prevention is our topic.

Good News – The results of the US Pointer Study have proven that the Alzheimer’s Association’s path to prevention has been taking us in the right direction for many years!

What is the US Pointer Study? It is the Alzheimer’s Association U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. Pointer). This two-year trial found cognitive function improved regardless of sex, race/ethnicity, genetic risk or cardio-metabolic health when factors like diet, exercise, cognitive engagement and health were monitored. All parts of the 10 Ways to Love Your Brain, which has been the prevention regime that the Alzheimer’s Association has recommended for years.

With this encouraging news, let’s get moving – doing our 30-40 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic activity four times a week, plus strength and flexibility exercises twice a week; challenge our minds not only intellectually, but with social activities; monitor our health with regular check-ups; and follow the MIND diet. If you are a family caregiver for a loved one with memory disease, there is help available. One of the best organizations and websites is Alz.org. Their website includes a 24/7 helpline, information on how to come alongside your loved one, and even classes on caregiving. My two caregiver booklets, A Gradual Disappearance and The Dangers of Denial, are also helpful tools for family members.

During the next 6 months I am helping raise funds for the Alzheimer’s in honor of my parents and my in-laws who suffered with either Alzheimer’s or vascular dementia. Please donate.

From Pen to Purpose

Sunday 25th Jan

To honor my parents and in-laws I will be writing newsletters to raise funds for Alzheimer's research through the Alzheimers Association. Two of our parents suffered with vascular dementia and two died of Alzheimer's.

Out of our caregiving journey came two booklets for family caregivers, A Gradual Disappearance and The Dangers of Denial
Coming in the next few days - the first newsletter.
