💜 Why This Matters to Me

Wednesday 9th Sep
I’ve spent many years working in dementia care, and there is one thing I wish I could change more than anything:
The way we, as a society, understand dementia.
I believe that change starts with education, compassion, and curiosity—and it starts earlier than we think.
I want children to grow up understanding that dementia isn't something scary or something that makes a person “less than.” I want them to be curious. To ask questions. To learn why someone might behave differently. To understand that there is a person behind the diagnosis.
I want families to feel less afraid and more prepared when someone they love begins experiencing changes. I want caregivers to have the tools and understanding to respond with compassion instead of frustration. And I want communities to recognize that people living with dementia still have so much to contribute, experience, personality, and love to give.
That's why having families and children at Light Up the Lawn means so much to me.
Because imagine what could happen if we taught the next generation to approach dementia with curiosity instead of fear.
Imagine a child asking, “Why does Grandma do that?”—and instead of simply being told “She has dementia,” they're encouraged to understand what that means.
Imagine that child growing up knowing how to sit beside someone with dementia without being uncomfortable.
Imagine families understanding that a diagnosis doesn't mean the end of someone's story.
Imagine communities becoming places where people living with dementia aren't isolated or hidden away, but included, understood, and valued.
I truly believe that the more we expose people to dementia, educate them about it, and encourage curiosity, the closer we get to changing the way we care for people living with dementia.
That is the bigger purpose behind this event for me.
🕯️ Every light has a story.
💜 Every story deserves to be heard.
✨ And every generation has the opportunity to make a difference.
So bring your kids. Bring your parents. Bring your friends. Bring the person you're caring for.
Come curious.
Come learn.
Come connect.
Come remember someone you love.
And help me show our community that dementia doesn't have to be understood through fear—it can be understood through curiosity, education, compassion, dignity, and love.

Something Beautiful is Coming to Our Lawn

Thursday 20th Aug

This year, we're inviting our community to come together for an evening of love, remembrance, awareness and hope.

Introducing:

✨ LIGHT UP THE LAWN ✨
A Community Alzheimer's Awareness Fundraiser

We'll fill our lawn with glowing luminaries, each one decorated in honor or memory of someone whose life has been touched by Alzheimer's or dementia.

There will be music, local vendors, community resources, treats, activities and opportunities to give back.

And when the sun goes down, we'll light the lawn together. 🕯️💜

Because behind every luminary is a person.
A mother. A father. A spouse. A friend.
Someone loved. Someone remembered.
