In March 2023, to fight the helplessness that I felt as my mother suffered from Alzheimer's disease, I joined The Longest Day - a fundraiser supporting Alzheimer's care, research, and awareness. The Longest Day takes place each year on the summer solstice, the day with the most sunlight hours.
On June 20th, 2023, I spent 13.5 hours in the ocean in Nags Head, NC, 5:30am-7pm - a grueling day of cold water, rain, and rough waves. That evening, I learned that my mother, Charlotte Parrish, had passed away while I was in the ocean. Alzheimer's had robbed of her of so much, but now she was at peace. I decided then that I would honor her by participating in this great event every year.
On June 21st, 2026, I'll be back in the ocean for the 4th year in a row. If there are waves, I'll ride them. If not, I'll swim. If weather is too bad, I'll go the next day that weather allows.
Feel free to join me in the water or to stop by and say hi. I'll be wearing a purple rash guard shirt and my wife and friends will be under a purple tent at Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, NC.
